Our Leadership Team

Doug Cowan - Founder & CEO

Doug started the company in 1978 with a clear vision of the role corporate fitness could play in fostering a healthy partnership between empowered people, constructive work practices and productive organizations. His strong belief in the importance of individual health and fitness in all our lives underlies his deep and lasting commitment to the ongoing development of Health Systems Group.

In collaboration with the senior management team at HSG, Doug has established the organization as the largest and most successful company of its kind in Canada. His continuing passion is working with HSG's senior management team to build an enduring legacy of leadership and corporate renewal capacity within the organization.

Over the years, Doug has worked with Kim Snider to expand HSG's original consulting and management capability in corporate fitness and wellness, to include commercial fitness clubs, and not-for-profit fitness and recreation centres. He has consulted with over 100 companies in the development of their fitness and wellness programs; as well as several commercial clubs and not-for-profit fitness and recreation centres.

Doug holds a BA in History, a BPHE, and a BEd. from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario; plus a MA in Physical Education from University of Alberta. He was awarded the Ontario Fitness Council Award for Consulting Achievement in 1986 and received the Wellness Pioneer Award from the Workplace Health & Wellness Institute in 2000.

Kim Snider, President

Kim began working with Health Systems Group in 1986 as a program manager in a small employee fitness centre and later went on to manage the opening and operation of HSG's first Club project. She has worked in both our east and west divisions and in all three of HSG's business streams, including employee fitness, workplace wellness and fitness club management. Kim now manages HSG's total business operations. She is heavily involved in client service, staff development, client consulting and new project start up.

Kim has consulted on the development of over 40 fitness facilities ranging in size from 2,500 square feet to over 50,000 square feet. Her extensive experience also includes consulting on business plans for corporate health management and directing wellness initiatives in a variety of settings including private and public sector, with large and small employers and in decentralized locations.

Kim's breadth of organizational experience brings a pragmatic and strategic approach to business development and growth, and a keen sense of customer service and support to HSG's clients.

Kim holds an Honours BSc in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo.

Susan Martin – Vice President

As Vice President, Sue's current role at HSG is focused on corporate development and special projects. She brings a diverse background in association management, community development and management training to her work. Her broad experience and organizational skills, combined with her attention to detail brings quality to the projects she is involved in.

With over 25 years of experience in the wellness field, Sue pioneered the integration of wellness and self management education into management training programs with a number of corporate clients in the early 1980's. She has designed and delivered customized health, wellness and stress management programs to companies across Canada. Her experience also includes management training in customer service and communication as well as delivering train the trainer programs.

Sue is a graduate of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario with a BA and BPE degree.

Denise Gordon-Mohamud, FCCA – Director, Finance & Administration

Denise has over 15 years experience in accounting and business administration. She heads up the Finance & Administration Support Team at HSG, overseeing finance, human resources and IT. Denise also facilitates HSG's internal supervisor workshops on Customer Service.

Although her vocation is accounting, she has a very wide variety of personal and professional interests. She has a keen interest in wellness and seeing individuals make positive strides towards personal well being.

Denise is a graduate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Leanne Blackwell – Director, Fitness & Recreation Services, Ontario Region

With over 18 years in the industry, Leanne brings a breadth of experience in managing and operating a variety of corporate facilities ranging in size from single person projects to managing a large staff. Leanne now oversees HSG operations in the Ontario Region. She is responsible for client service, staff recruitment and development, consulting and new project start-up.

In addition to facility design and program development, Leanne provides human resource management support to our extensive team throughout HSG's operations in Ontario. Her systems-oriented, practical yet intuitive approach to supervision and staff support is a great asset to Health Systems Group.

Leanne earned a Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure Studies from Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Lindsay Knight – Senior Consultant, Workplace Wellness

With over 20 years in the Fitness, Health and Recreation field, Lindsay is responsible for planning and implementing Wellness Programs with a wide variety of HSG clients, including school boards, the corporate sector and hospitals. This involves working closely with Wellness Committees in client organizations, where her creative spirit and endless enthusiasm are contagious. She has extensive expertise in Stress Management, Office Ergonomics, and Weight Management.

Lindsay continues to be passionate about seeing people reach their health and wellness goals. "One of the most satisfying aspects of our business is the positive feedback that our employees continually receive from participants."

Lindsay is a graduate from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Physical Education & Health.

Dale Miller – Senior Consultant, Fitness Management

Dale's life-long passion for Fitness, Sports and Recreation has instilled such enduring qualities as commitment, discipline, team work, and good communication.

Dale has been with Health Systems Group since 1989 and has worked in the field for over 20 years. In his current role, he provides leadership, supervision, and coaching to HSG Account Managers in several corporate fitness programs in the metro Toronto area. Prior to joining the senior management team at HSG, he headed up several of our large fitness and recreation projects in Edmonton, Calgary and Alliston, Ontario.

Dale graduated from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, with a BPE, specializing in Athletic Training & Conditioning.

Neil Speirs – GM, Fitness & Recreation Services, Alberta Region

After joining HSG in 1984, Neil has supervised the staffing and operations of ten employee fitness centres in Calgary and Edmonton and brings a wealth of experience to project operations, staff development and client service. His current focus is on developing new business in the region, and project start-ups - including the hiring and training of managers, fitness consultants and personal trainers with superior qualifications to achieve HSG's high member service standards.

Neil began his career at one of our largest employee fitness centres in Calgary. He has assisted with several long-term research projects which examined the relationship and impact of employee fitness centres on workplace absenteeism.

Neil has a BPE and a BSc. from the University of Calgary and is a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).

Greg Simmons – GM, Fitness & Recreation Services, Atlantic Region

Greg joined HSG in 2003, but has been employed in various facets of the Fitness/Recreation field since 1988 including Municipal Recreation, Commercial Fitness Clubs, Personal Training and Corporate Wellness. Greg brings a wealth of experience in personal training and class instruction. In addition, he has developed numerous member incentive programs.

Working out of Halifax, Greg's current focus is on business development and project management in the Atlantic Region where he provides staff supervision and training; and operational management, including marketing, budgeting, and sales.

He is a professional speaker and author of "This F.I.T.S." and "This F.I.T.S. Lifestyle Journal" as well as numerous published articles. Greg is a Certified Personal Trainer and has a Diploma in Recreation Leadership from Loyalist College.
